Authority for Parenting Coordination in Massachusetts

Parenting Coordination in Massachusetts is authorized by Probate and Family Court Standing Order 1-17. Standing Order 1-17 applies to the appointment of a parenting coordinator pursuant to an agreement by the parents to work with a parenting coordinator that is approved by the court and incorporated into the court’s order, or incorporated and merged in a judgment of the court.

The court also has the power to appoint a parenting coordinator through an order or judgment, without the agreement of the parents.

Standing Order 1-17 does not apply to a situation where parents agree to use the services of a parenting coordinator that is not part of a court’s order or judgement.
